Why choose Planning Penguin?

Everyone needs to be prepared. It does not matter if you have $100 or $1,000,000 in your checking account right now. Some people think you need to be rich to need estate planning, but that is not true. There is more to estate planning than just your finances. What about your passwords, social media accounts, unlocking your phone, your medical wishes, or if you want to be an organ donor? Making your wishes known is just as important as the financial stuff.

What is Planning Penguin?

Planning Penguin is a cloud based digital filing cabinet: a single place in which to store information about how and where to find your assets, bank accounts, insurance, collectibles, will, trust(s), medical wishes, funeral arrangements, and other valuables in the real world. You share this account with your loved ones so that when the time comes, they can unlock your digital filing cabinet and access all the information you have stored there. It is not only a great way for you to get and stay organized, but also has tools and guidance to help your loved ones deal with their loss both financially and emotionally.

What Do I Use Planning Penguin For?

Planning Penguin helps you document and map your assets and important documents and share that map with your loved ones in case the unthinkable happens. With our check list wizard we make it easy for you to review what you have (and don't have) and document it without the stress. Don't have some piece of information easily at hand, no problem once it is on the check list we will remind you to get it later. Don't have time to do everything in 1 session (most people don't), no problem we allow you to break it up into smaller and more manageable tasks.

Did you know in some cases if you don't have an original with a physical signature the court may reject paper or digital copies of some documents? Do you know what your insurance company requires for a claim in the case of a loss to a fire? If it is not documented properly they may reject your claim. Planning Penguin helps you with document best practices.

Is Planning Penguin Secure?

Planning Penguin uses the best security standards, and it is safe, but Don’t Trust Us! Can you trust us? Of course you can, but we don’t want you to. We don’t want you to trust any 3rd party if you can help it. Our system is designed to collect information that is useful to your beneficiaries but useless to everyone else. We store as little or no sensitive information as possible so even if your information got out it would not be dangerous. For example when you add a bank account to our system you only add the name of the bank and the last 4 digits of the account number. If a cybercriminal accessed that information they would not be able to access your money with it. On the other hand if your beneficiary had that information, identification, and a few other documents they could walk into the bank and get access to your account in an emergency.

Why we started Planning Penguin?

It was many years ago and started with a family story I heard around our family's holiday table many times.
My grandfather, Papa Lester, passed away in the 1970s when I was very young. Shortly after that when my Grandma Sally was out driving on a routine errand the car died on her. While she waited on the side of the road a nice young man stopped to help her and discovered she had run out of gas. When the young man asked her when was the last time she filled up the tank she told him she had never done that in years of driving and did not even know where the gas went. It turns out that every weekend Papa Lester would take Grandma Sally’s car to buy groceries and deliver them to their kids. On his way home he would fill up her tank. For as long as she had been driving she had never filled up the gas tank herself. This made me wonder what else he had done for her over the years that she did not even know about?

Many years after Grandma Sally ran out of gas (about 10 years ago), I was thinking that my family has no idea where I keep my valuables. Things like what bank I use, where my retirement account is, what my passwords are, what online accounts/usernames I use, where my safety deposit box is, and what my collectibles are worth. I have also talked to my family a little about what my medical wishes are (like being an organ donor), but I wanted a fast, easy, secure way to share all that information with my sister (who is also the executor of my estate and my medical proxy). I looked for an online service that could provide such a service and did not find one. So my solution at the time was to write up as much information as I could think of and put those documents on a flash drive (password protected) and mail it to her. Then when I wanted to update the information because I remembered something new or added something new I would mail her a new drive and ask her to mail back the old one. While that did work for the most part it was not updated as much as it should have been and there was a lot of risk that the drive would be lost or damaged. We used that solution for about 10 years. I looked for an online service on and off over the years, but just could not find anything that I felt fit our needs.

That is when I decided to start Planning Penguin, so that everyone could have a fast, easy, secure way to share their sensitive information (financial or password), non-sensitive (personal letters, collectible's values) and medical wishes (donor, DNR) with their family.
